GUIDE · DRONE GUIDES & RESOURCES
FPV drone cinematography is transforming how properties, venues and events are showcased in Queensland. But with the rise in demand comes a growing number of operators—not all of whom hold the required CASA approvals.
This guide walks you through the due diligence process so you can hire with confidence.
In Queensland's regulatory environment (consistent with national CASA rules), commercial FPV operations require:
- ReOC — Remote Operator's Certificate. Confirms the business is CASA-approved for commercial operations
- EVLOS or BVLOS approval — Specific authorisation to fly FPV outside standard visual line of sight
- Public Liability Insurance — minimum $10M coverage
- Site Risk Assessments — documented flight plan for each job
- Professional Equipment — commercial-grade drone, not consumer toy
| Source | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| **CASA-registered ReOC holders** | Confirmed licensed operators | No marketing info |
| **DronesForHire.com.au** | CASA-verified profiles, reviews, licensing shown | Limited to listed operators |
| **Industry referrals** | Trusted recommendations | Narrow pool |
| **Facebook / Instagram** | Wide reach, show real work | No vetting at all |
| **Airtasker / gig platforms** | Low cost | Zero licensing verification |
1. Use DronesForHire or the CASA ReOC register for initial shortlist
2. Cross-check with portfolio quality on YouTube or Instagram
3. Ask the two questions before discussing price
Before getting a quote, ask:
"Can you provide your CASA ReOC number and confirm you hold current EVLOS approval for outdoor commercial FPV operations?"
Expected response: A straightforward yes, with the ReOC number and EVLOS reference.
Red flags: "I'm working on it," "It's just a small drone so it's fine," "I have a spotter," or changing the subject.
"Can you provide a certificate of currency for your public liability insurance that specifically covers drone operations?"
Expected response: A PDF certificate showing the policy period, coverage amount, and the operator's business name matching the ReOC.
Red flags: "I'll send it later" (and never does), "The insurance covers everything," vague policy details.
Licensing is table stakes. The next question is quality.
- Smooth, stable footage — FPV should show deliberate, controlled movement, not erratic jerking
- Appropriate speed — a venue tour should move at walking pace through interiors, not race
- Proper exposure — the drone camera should handle indoor/outdoor transitions cleanly
- Sound design — if there's audio, it should complement the visuals, not fight them
- Single-take capability — a true FPV fly-through is one continuous take, not a montage of clips
- Only standard aerials advertised as FPV (FPV has the cockpit feel—you'll know it when you see it)
- No example of your type of property (commercial, industrial, residential)
- Grainy or compressed footage on their showreel
1. "Can you fly inside this venue/property?"
- Confirm indoor FPV capability and experience
2. "What's the turnaround time?"
- Standard: raw stabilised + graded footage within 5 business days. Rush available on request?
3. "Do you provide a site-specific risk assessment?"
- Professional operators always say yes
4. "Can you deliver 4K vertical for Reels/TikTok?"
- Important for social media deliverables
5. "What's your cancellation policy?"
- Weather cancelations are normal—how are they handled?
| Region | Considerations |
|---|---|
| **Brisbane** | CBD has restricted airspace. Operator must know controlled zones. Indoor flights often preferred. |
| **Sunshine Coast** | Coastal wind conditions. Council operating permits helpful (Reignland holds Sunshine Coast Council permit). |
| **Gold Coast** | Restricted airspace near airport. Heliport traffic considerations. |
| **Fraser Coast** | Distance from major operator bases — factor in travel costs. |
| **Bundaberg** | Regional hub. Few licensed FPV operators. Check travel costs. |
| **Gympie / Mary Valley** | Rural operations with fewer restrictions but distance considerations. |
FPV venue fly-throughs start at $495. Standard aerial, hybrid, and event work are quoted per job — size, location, and deliverables affect the price, so always request an itemised quote rather than expecting a fixed package rate.
